Background: Approximately 10% of clinical trials published each year deal with cancer, however, only 20% of cancer interventions are supported by level I evidence. Objective: To describe the attitudes and opinions toward evidence-based medicine (EBM) practice in hematology and oncology in Colombia. Methods: In August of 2006 we surveyed a group of members from the Colombian Association of Hematology and Oncology (ACHO) on their attitudes and opinions toward EBM, their perceived understanding of EBM terminology, their familiarity with and use of sources of medical literature, as well as their EBM competence, based on their understanding of core concepts. The instrument designed to collect data was developed from existing yet not validated EBM survey instrument. Results: A total of 53 respondents completed the survey resulting in a response rate of 46% (considering the totality of members of the ACHO). There was widespread agreement that practicing EBM improves patient care (median score 8; range 4-10) and that every hematologist/oncologist should be familiar with critical appraisal techniques (median score 7; range, 4-9). The percentage of respondents who indicated that they understand and could explain to others the terms NNT, NNH, power and level of evidence was 60%, 22%, 75% and 75%, respectively. The NCCN guidelines (Clinical Practice Guidelines in Oncology/Hematology, National Comprehensive Cancer Network, US) were used regularly by 32% and at least once per month by 38% of respondents. 46% of participants were unaware of the PubMed search engine and 40% used it regularly, while 76% were unaware of the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and only 24% had ever used it. The mean EBM competence score for all respondents was 73% (SD± 17%). Conclusions: The findings of this study confirm that hematologist/oncologist have a favorable attitude toward EBM in Colombia. Increased efforts to promote an understanding of EBM through workshops, publications and web based resources designed a cancer related audience seem to be indicated. oncology hematology survey evidence based medicine 2256-2877 2256-2915 2012-07-01T00:00:00Z 15 24 https://revista.acho.info/index.php/acho/article/download/295/265 2012-07-01 https://doi.org/10.51643/22562915.295 2012-07-01T00:00:00Z 10.51643/22562915.295 |
