El yagé es una preparación indígena, de Sur América, con uso extendido a otros continentes. Comúnmente contiene B, caapi y P. viridis, cuya combinación produce estado aumentado de alerta, efectos visionarios, hipersensibilidad y sensación de trascendencia, incidiendo en el funcionamiento de las neuronas del rafe y del locus coeruleo; no produce dependencia.   Hombres y animales se vinculan filogenéticamente, particularmente en el uso de plantes psicoactivas.
