As Robert L. Rabin demonstrates, the book is a substantial contribution to our understanding of administrative government in the United States during its origin and in the present day. This article presents the most important ideas of Mashaw’s work: it looks at the Administration’s evolution since the earliest days of the American republic. To address this challenge, it explores America’s government during the antebellum and after the Civil War. Finally, this article develops the author’s ideas on the first century of state building and explores the implications of Mashaw’s masterpiece on American legal-historical discipline.
