Como se usa actualmente la palabra inglesa "scientism", es una verdad verbal trivial que se debe evitar el cientismo –una actitud inapropiadamente deferente hacia la ciencia. Pero constituye una cuestión sustancial determinar cuando, y por qué, la deferencia hacia las ciencias es inapropiada o exagerada.
