El objetivo de la revisión fue presentar los fundamentos del modelo cognitivo y la terapia cognitiva para el abuso de sustancias psicoactivas. Se llevó a cabo un análisis del modelo de Beck y la terapia cognitiva, tratamiento basado en la identificación de las distorsiones cognitivas, pensamientos automáticos, creencias intermedias adictivas y permisivas, y los comportamientos compensatorios derivados de la cognición y el 'antojo'. Acto seguido, se presentan los elementos claves para llevar a cabo una evaluación adecuada de los casos de trastornos adictivos, la formulación cognitiva de caso y la planeación de la terapia cognitiva.
