Religiosidad, bienestar subjetivo y desarrollo humano: una revisión crítica

Partiendo de la revisión crítica de los resultados de una serie de estudios empíricos, el objetivo de este ensayo es evaluar, con un mayor fundamento y alcance teórico, el papel de la religiosidad como determinante del bienestar subjetivo –de personas y países– a lo largo del proceso de desarrollo humano. Para ello, se integran las definiciones sustantiva y funcional de la religión y se establecen las diferencias entre religión y religiosidad; se aborda el enlace teórico entre religión/religiosidad y felicidad en la historia del pensamiento filosófico y de las ciencias sociales teniendo en cuenta las diversas funciones del hecho religioso (cognitiva, regulativa e integradora); se resumen los hallazgos principales de la investigación económi... La principal conclusión del trabajo es que la libertad (como libertad de elección) y la religiosidad se pueden contemplar como dos caras de la misma moneda, y, por tanto, deben analizarse en su relación con el bienestar subjetivo y la felicidad desde la perspectiva de los valores y sin imposiciones eurocéntricas. description_eng Starting from the critical review of the results of selected empirical studies, the objective of this essay is to evaluate, with a greater theoretical foundation and scope, the role of religiousnesss as a determinant of people and contries’ subjective well-being throughout of the human development process. To do this, the substantive and functional definitions of religion are integrated and differences between religion and religiosity are established; the theoretical link between religion / religiousnesss and happiness in the history of philosophical thinking and social sciences is adressed, taking into account the various functions of the religious fact (cognitive, regulatory and integrative); the main findings of recent economic research on the relationship between religiosity and subjective well-being in development studies are summarized; and finally the interactions of religiosity in the process of modernization-secularization-individualization characteristic of the second modernity are explored and the supposed substitutive effect between religiosity and freedom that the postmaterialist theory of modernization predicts is discussed. The main conclusion of the work is that freedom (as freedom of choice) and religiousness can be seen as two sides of the same coin, and, therefore, both must be analyzed in relation to subjective well-being and happiness from the perspective of the values ​​and without eurocentric impositions. Partiendo de la revisión crítica de los resultados de una serie de estudios empíricos, el objetivo de este ensayo es evaluar, con un mayor fundamento y alcance teórico, el papel de la religiosidad como determinante del bienestar subjetivo –de personas y países– a lo largo del proceso de desarrollo humano. Para ello, se integran las definiciones sustantiva y funcional de la religión y se establecen las diferencias entre religión y religiosidad; se aborda el enlace teórico entre religión/religiosidad y felicidad en la historia del pensamiento filosófico y de las ciencias sociales teniendo en cuenta las diversas funciones del hecho religioso (cognitiva, regulativa e integradora); se resumen los hallazgos principales de la investigación económica reciente sobre la relación entre religiosidad y bienestar subjetivo en los estudios del desarrollo; y finalmente se exploran las interacciones de la religiosidad en el proceso de modernización-secularización-individualización característico de la segunda modernidad y se discute el supuesto efecto sustitutivo entre religiosidad y libertad que predice la teoría postmaterialista de la modernización. La principal conclusión del trabajo es que la libertad (como libertad de elección) y la religiosidad se pueden contemplar como dos caras de la misma moneda, y, por tanto, deben analizarse en su relación con el bienestar subjetivo y la felicidad desde la perspectiva de los valores y sin imposiciones eurocéntricas. Starting from the critical review of the results of selected empirical studies, the objective of this essay is to evaluate, with a greater theoretical foundation and scope, the role of religiousnesss as a determinant of people and contries’ subjective well-being throughout of the human development process. To do this, the substantive and functional definitions of religion are integrated and differences between religion and religiosity are established; the theoretical link between religion / religiousnesss and happiness in the history of philosophical thinking and social sciences is adressed, taking into account the various functions of the religious fact (cognitive, regulatory and integrative); the main findings of recent economic research on the relationship between religiosity and subjective well-being in development studies are summarized; and finally the interactions of religiosity in the process of modernization-secularization-individualization characteristic of the second modernity are explored and the supposed substitutive effect between religiosity and freedom that the postmaterialist theory of modernization predicts is discussed. The main conclusion of the work is that freedom (as freedom of choice) and religiousness can be seen as two sides of the same coin, and, therefore, both must be analyzed in relation to subjective well-being and happiness from the perspective of the values ​​and without eurocentric impositions.
