La storia della città europea è fortemente condizionata dalla costruzione (e dopo secoli dalla demolizione) delle opere fortificate Gli archivi militari europei, gli archivi di stato e comunali sono i custodi dei moltissimi disegni che testimoniano in che modo le città sono state plasmate dalle esigenze della guerra. Un patrimonio archivistico importante che deve essere conosciuto, divulgato e valorizzato. Nowadays European military, state and municipal archives are the custodians of the many drawings that are evidence of the ways in which the necessities of war shaped the city. This has become an important archival heritage that today ought to be rediscovered, promoted and re-evaluated. For years, city plans were often kept secret because they were strategic documents for state security. Over the centuries, when the urgencies of war were halted, they were dispersed among various archives. Until the beginning of the 18th century, a number of cities were under Spanish rule (they are now present-day Piedmont).
