¿Qué es la vida?
Aunque la vida sea un milagro no parece desempeñar ninguna función crucial en la vida del Universo, pues, a gran escala, el protagonismo pertenece a la materia oscura, a los cúmulos de galaxias, a las inmensas nubes de gas y polvo, a los agujeros negros, a las explosiones cataclísmicas, donde la vida parecería no tener lugar. Sin embargo, y pese a su a nivel cósmico, ocupa el lugar central en nuestra conciencia, en nuestros afectos y preocupaciones, en nuestros valores y emociones  Después de centrar la atención en el significado biológico y no en el biográfico de vida, y después de exponer la propuesta de diferentes definiciones de la vida y sus insuficiencias, en el presente trabajo se hace notar que la vida, al menos como la conocemos en la tierra, es un acontecimiento singular, dado que responde sobre todo a las leyes de la biología con exclusivo alcance terrestre más que a las leyes de la química y la física, cuyo alcance es universal. Pero también se exploran otras posibilidades de vida desde sus características físico químicas ¿Es, entonces, la vida una rara excepción en un universo abiótico o una ocurrencia frecuente en un universo hormigueante de vida ?¿son concebibles otras formas de vida? Hay quienes afirman que la vida es casi un milagro (ErnstMayr), hay otros que afirman lo contrario, que responde a leyes universales, que es un "imperativo cósmico"  (Christian de Duve). Lo cierto es que para averiguar si somos milagros únicos o ciclos regulares del devenir cósmico, necesitaríamos averiguar si hay vida extraterrestre y cuáles son sus características, sólo así se podría responder con alguna precisión a la pregunta ¿qué es la vida? However, despite its lack of significance in the cosmic level, life has a central role in our consciousness, in our affections and worries, in our values and emotions. Alter focusing in the biological (rather than biographical) meaning of life, and after expounding and examining thelimitations of different definitions of life, this work maintains that life, at least as it is known on earth, is unique since it obeys mainly biological laws restricted to our planet, rather than physical or chemical laws which are universal. Other possibilities of life, from their physicchemical characteristics are explored. Is life a rare exception in a non-biotic universe or is it a common occurrence in a universe full of life? Can we conceive of other forms of life? There are some who hold that life is almost a miracle (Ernst Mayr), some others think that it obeys universal laws, that it is a "cosmic imperative" (Christian de Duve). Whatever it may be, in order to find out whether we are unique miracles or regular cycles of a cosmic coming to be, we need to determine whether there is extraterrestrial life and which are its characteristics.
